What Personal Development Means
This is a question I get asked a lot – “what does personal development mean?” I’m going to share with you what personal development means, the benefits it can have to your mindset and life and some ideas for methods you can start to add into your routine.
One definition I found said:
“The process of improving oneself through such activities as enhancing employment skills, increasing consciousness and building wealth”
The benefits of personal development that I have had include:
- Feeling happier
- Less stressed
- Improve health & wellness
- Overcoming anxiety and fears
- Better sleep quality
- Feeling relaxed and refreshed
- Enjoying my work, sport and life
- Improved relationships with friends and family
- Built confidence
There are so many ways to work on personal development. I’m going to talk you through a few of my favourites.
I have been reading self-development books since I first discovered personal development. There is so many out there to discover new things about every area. From anxiety and confidence to how the brain works the way it does. I find it so interesting learning more about personal development techniques and adding them into my life. Through reading I have discovered many tools including mindfulness, self-care, journaling and affirmations.
You don’t need to go out and buy a load of books to learn by reading. There are so many blogs and websites out there that you can read to expand your knowledge in any area. A few of my favourites are:
There are so many podcasts out there to discover more about personal development. If you haven’t yet found the podcast app it’s the purple icon on Apple products. I’m sure android have something similar available so do some research to find out how you can access them.
I found podcasts pretty early on in my personal development journey and have been listening daily since. You can subscribe to your favourites so they automatically download and are ready for you to listen. There are so many that I love to listen them all so below is a blog post with details of my favourites.
I am so glad that discovered self-care. I now take at least one evening a week to sit back and relax without my phone, social media or any other distractions. This time is used to relax and refresh my mind. Although you might think how is there time for that in your busy schedule you’ll be surprised at how much more productive you are in all other areas by spending this time on self-care.
I highly recommend that you take a few minutes to write down everything that you enjoying doing. What makes you feel relaxed, energised or happy. Make the effort to schedule time for these activities every week like you would an appointment. Make it a priority in your life and you’ll be amazed by the benefits.
