Most of us have probably heard of the concept of visualisation, but perhaps you are unsure as to what it actually means. What do you think of when you hear the word visualisation? Does it sound like an airy -fairy idea or do you practice it regularly, seeing the results in your life on a daily basis? Let’s explore what powerful visualisation is and how you might be able to put it into practice!
Practicing positive thinking has become a popular trend and for a good reason. The habit of thinking positively contributes to our wellbeing and helps us reduce the stress and anxiety that occur as a result of thinking negatively. Affirmations and visualization are, in a way, a natural extension of thinking positively. While affirmations are short statements or declarations designed to send positive messages to the brain by repeating them various times a day, visualisation is a longer process where we create and imagine the desired future we want to have.
The good news is that positive thinking, affirmations, and powerful visualization all contribute to developing a growth mindset. A growth mindset can really help us to tackle the challenges and obstacles in our lives that will inevitably turn up on our path.
In actual fact, many of us spend much of the day visualising. We are just not consciously aware we are doing it! Yes, folks, it is called the power of the imagination! Most of the day we are busy imagining the future in one form or another. Ideally, we are imagining positive outcomes, but sadly this is frequently not the case. Oftentimes we are imagining the worst case scenario of the future or the what would happen if… type scenario This is not helpful and just exacerbates the patterns of negative thinking we already have!
Imagination and visualisation on a basic level are actually the same. The difference is that our imagination tends to to flow naturally and creatively at will, whereas visualisation is a conscious disciplined effort to create a mental picture of our future.
As we are going about our daily business we are not consciously sitting down to visualise. Yet, when we are at work or perhaps lying down in bed at night, our imagination starts working. We create mental pictures in our heads of what the next day or the next week looks like. Perhaps we imagine how an issue in our lives is going to be resolved.
We have established that imagining something and visualising something is almost the same. So what actually is visualisation and how can it contribute to our success and wellbeing?
Visualisation is using your imagination in a conscious disciplined way as a tool to help you imagine and create the future you desire.
Here are some ideas to get you started with powerful visualization. It’s important to use the present tense, as this will make you feel that you are actually living now in the desired future you want to create.
Perhaps one of the easiest ways to get started is to use visualisations that have already been created Listen to ready-made visualisations using an app like Insight Timer for example. They have a great choice of inspiring visualisations you can choose from.
Write out how you want your future life to be including as much detail as possible. Read it at least once daily. Mornings and evenings are good times. When you are reading your visualisation, it ’s best to say it out loud and imagine how it feels as you say the words..
Using the same written visualization you have already created. record yourself speaking it out loud using your phone or laptop. Be sure to read it in a slow melodic voice to set the mood and allow you to relax into it. You can also add background music to it if you prefer. You can listen to this recorded visualisation anytime or anywhere! In your car, at night before sleeping or sitting relaxing in the garden.
A very simple yet powerful visualisation is to try visualising in the shower as you get ready for your day. As you feel the hot water from the shower spraying over you, close your eyes and start imagining your day and what your perfect day looks like. Be sure to go into as much detail as you can. By doing this simple visualisation, you are setting the intention for your day!
