Mental Health Day
Do you ever wake up and just feel that you can’t face the day? Feeling down and unmotivated. It’s so important to listen to our bodies and do what is needed. Sometimes a mental health day is needed and that’s what we’re going to be talking about today.
While I highly recommend personal development as a daily habit to try to manage your mental health I understand and experience myself the odd day when something triggers you and you find yourself on a downward spiral.
In times like this it is a good idea to take some time for yourself. Doing activities that make you feel relaxed and happy. Create a list of all the activities that you enjoy, that make you happy, relaxed and calm. Below are some ideas of activities that you can do on your mental health day to look after yourself.

Start by relaxing
Put on some music that you enjoy and that makes you feel relaxed. Have a bath or shower to feel refreshed and relaxed. Feeling clean after a bath or shower is a great way to start the day with the right intentions of looking after yourself.
Talk to someone
Before you start all the activities that you enjoy, take the time to get everything off your mind by telling someone. Cry if you need to, just get everything out in the open so it is no longer only in your head. This is a great way to clear your mind and be able to move on with your day with a clear head and a more positive mind. Talk to someone that you trust and that you know will support you and give positive advice going forward.
Choose a book that you love and that makes you feel happy. Try an uplifting and positive book that will improve the way you are feeling. If you don’t have any books at home try Audible (click here for your free 30 day trial) or read positive blog posts.
Meditation is one of my favourite things to do in times of triggered anxiety or depression. It is a great way to ground yourself and get some perspective. I highly recommend the Insight Timer App. This is full of free guided mediations on all topics and is a great way to have meditation there whenever you need it.
Journal about your thoughts
This is a great way to get everything out if you have a lot on your mind. It’s good to write down everything that comes to mind and don’t judge it just allow everything to come out. I recommend then creating a positive lesson from this. Write down how you can change this belief or stop the same experience happening again if this is possible.
Write down all the evidence against your negative thoughts. For example if you feel you are unsuccessful and unworthy, write down all the things you have achieved and do well in your life. Doing this exercise will confirm that your negative thoughts are just that, they are thoughts, not your reality. Prove to yourself that they are not true and really feel it.
Reflect on everything you have in your life to be grateful for. It is impossible to feel negative and positive at the same time and gratitude is a great way to feel positive. There is so much to be grateful for and I’m sure once you get started you will find so many things that you can be grateful for.
Even if it is just outside your house or in your garden spend some time outside getting fresh air. Go for a walk in nature, if you live near a lake this is a great place to go to connect with nature. Even just walking around your neighbourhood will be a great activity on your mental health day. Take this time to practice mindfulness, taking in your surroundings and focusing on nature and the present moment to take your mind off everything going on in your head.
