This is the first of many posts in the “Success Stories” series. Some very inspirational women will be sharing their own struggles and how personal development has helped them transform their life. Every Thursday a new story will be published at 8pm with the intention of inspiring you on your own journey to show you that wherever you are now, however you feel you can transform your life with the support of personal development.
To start the series off I will be sharing my story with managing anxiety and overcoming fears, both of which have been a part of my personal development journey. Back in my late teens I struggled with anxiety and depression and at its worse I struggled to leave the house. Simple tasks like shopping and driving became impossible without causing me anxiety. I finally made the decision to call the Doctors surgery and make an appointment after I had a meltdown in Morrisons simply because my sister left me alone in there for a minute. It was then that I knew that something wasn’t right and that I needed professional support to get through it.
I am so glad I made that decision, I was referred to a counsellor who introduced me to mindfulness. More importantly it introduced me to personal development and got me intrigued into what I could do to support myself. I continued to see a counsellor who helped me recognise my fears and anxieties and supported me in overcoming these.
On discovering personal development I wanted to learn as much as I possibly could so I began reading books, listening to podcasts and researching different personal development habits. From this I began putting together my own morning routine which consisted of my favourite personal development habits that got me started in the right mindset.
Over time this morning routine has developed into what it is today and now includes reading, journaling, affirmations, gratitude, meditation, exercise and visualisation. I also listen to podcasts and YouTube videos throughout the day as well as my motivational music playlist when I need it.
I start my morning feeling energised, positive and motivated. I start everyday with my hour long morning routine to enforce this feeling and stay as positive as I can. Now I have a bank of personal development habits that I know are there when I need them and I continue to add to them constantly by learning new things. I truly believe that we should always be learning and developing ourselves, this is so important for personal growth.
Now I feel I am managing anxiety and depression well. When I feel a wobble coming on I am able to manage it with my personal development habits and know how to handle it to stop it going out of my control. I make regular time for self-care in my everyday routine which is great for managing anxiety and stress. This is how I have avoided burnout even with working full time, this business and playing a sport. I realise the importance of self-care and rest and I make this a priority. If I feel tired and like I need a rest thats exactly what I do. That is the best bit of advice I can give you.
I have built my confidence and learned how to believe in myself. Now I feel confident in my ability at work, bowls and in life. I am comfortable in social situations, meeting new people and socialising with friends and family (all of which used to be a struggle). Since discovering self-love and acceptance I know that I am perfect the way I am and that the judgement of others is irrelevant. I allow them to have their own opinions on me and what I do but ultimately the only opinion that I listen to is my own.
If you take just one thing from this post I would love if it is to be open to personal development and explore the options. Find the ones that you enjoy and get positive results from and stick to them consistently. I know you will love the results you get.
Let me know where you are on your journey over in the Facebook Group and if I can support you in any way I will.
