Inspiring Lessons From The Greatest Showman
I knew as soon as I first heard the soundtrack to The Greatest Showman that I would love it. The music was uplifting and the lyrics were meaningful. Once I had watched the film I loved the songs even more because of the connection with the story. It is such an inspiring story with so many important lessons that we can all learn from and use in our own lives.
**If you haven’t already watched the film I highly recommend you do before reading this so I don’t tell you everything that happens.
It’s clear from the start that the main character played by Hugh Jackman is a big dreamer. As a poor boy, who then becomes homeless when his father dies he is dreaming about his future full of happiness, love, success and wealth. I love how much this film shows the power of dreaming big and how you can achieve anything you put your mind to. Everything that he wants to achieve he does. He marries the girl he’s always loved and has two children. He starts a business and grows it to a success and inspires people doing it. This just goes to show that you can achieve anything.

Charity’s attitude to life
Even in the hardest of times when P.T. Barnum loses his job she stays positive and is grateful for all the good they have in their life. She expects nothing from her husband and is happy with his love and their family. Charity supports his business and encourages him even when success doesn’t show straight away. This shows when they are wishing and she says “I wish for happiness, like this forever” this is minutes after her husband has lost his job. It’s such a good attitude to be positive and grateful for everything you’ve already got in your life.
Never give up
At first, like most businesses, Barnum doesn’t see the success that he wants. Does he give up? Start a new business? Get a job? No he NEVER GIVES UP. He keeps trying until he sees the success that he wants. Even when he has success he still keeps trying to improve himself and his business. This is a lesson we can all use in our own lives. In any area of your life, make sure you give it everything and keep trying, even when it gets hard never ever give up.
When one of P.T Barnums daughters started ballet later than the other girls she wants to quit because the other girls are bullying her and she feels she isn’t as good as them. I love the final scene when she is in the ballet performance and does the solo. It’s so important to encourage all children to never give up on their dreams and to follow this advice ourselves. With practice and commitment we can all achieve anything.
Anyone can achieve the success they desire
How often have you said to yourself “I can’t be successful because… I don’t have enough time, money, resources, support” or any other factor? There really is no barriers to success. P.T. Barnum goes from a poor, homeless boy to a wealthy and successful businessman. This isn’t uncommon either, if you put your mind to it and stop making excuses you can have the success you desire. Get clear on what success looks like for you, put together some action steps and get started today. You deserve success and nothing is capable of stopping you so go for it.
Make family time important
This is something that P.T. Barnum forgets in his success with Jenny Lind, he goes on tour with her leaving his wife and family at home. He almost loses his family because of this and didn’t spend enough time with them. Family time should be a priority, you are never to busy for family time. I usually have set working hours for my business but will change then when needed for family. For example the other day my Nan was at my house so I rescheduled my business plans for the next day so I could spend time with her. I am so grateful for this time and love making the most of it.
Be grateful for what you have
This happens in the film when P.T. Barnum goes after more success by going on tour with Jenny. He forgets to be grateful for all the success he already has, the relationships, friendships and life that he already has and is wanting more. It’s good to set new goals to work towards and keep building on your success but make sure you are still grateful for the current success and life that you already have. Throughout your life when having success and striving for more don’t forget to be grateful for everything that you already have.
No one else’s opinions about you matter
This came up for me for a few different reasons in this film. The first being the people in the film that don’t support the circus and his ideas and call the acts “freaks” even setting fire to the circus. There will always be people like this in our personal and professional life. It is important to remember that the only opinion that matters is you own and not to be put off or discouraged by other peoples opinions about you.
When Phillip meets Anne and falls in love with her, his parents disapprove of her. To start with she lets this bother her. Feeling unworthy and undeserving. I am so glad that she chooses to ignore this judgement so they can be happy together. Love is all that matters and no one should ever let other peoples judgment stop them from a loving relationship that they can be happy in.
The other part of the story I saw this message was when P.T. Barnum starts seeking the approval of the wealthier audience by finding a singer rather than sticking to his circus and acts. This came from a bad review from a critic that all the wealthy people listen to and as a result they never came to his circus. He wanted to impress these people and wanted their approval so he went out seeking more and changing his business and life just for them.
“The noblest art is that of making others happy” – P.T. Barnum
The Greatest Showman Soundtrack
A Million Dreams
This song is all about visualisation and I love singing along to it. I have always loved visualising and I love that the power of it is shown in this film. The exact house that they go in as children when singing this song becomes their house when they are older. That is such a powerful message and one that we should all use in our lives. Spend time everyday visualising what you want in life and make it a reality.
This chorus just says it all:
” ‘Cause every night I lie in bed
The brightest colors fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see
A million dreams is all it’s gonna take
A million dreams for the world we’re gonna make”
This is the song when all the acts are about to perform for the first time. All nervous and afraid of what others will think of them, all ashamed of their flaws. This song is about them coming alive, realising their dreams and living the life they deserve.
“When the world becomes a fantasy
And you’re more than you could ever be
‘Cause you’re dreaming with your eyes wide open
And we know we can’t be go back again
To the world that we were living in
‘Cause we’re dreaming with our eyes wide open
So, come alive!
I see it in your eyes
You believe that lie
That you need to hide your face
Afraid to step outside
So you lock the door
But don’t you stay that way”
This Is Me
I think the first few lines in this song are so powerful, all the lyrics are so meaningful and I’m sure you can relate in some way. At some point in life we have all felt judged and like we are not good enough for one reason or another. This song reminds me that we are who we are and we should be proud of this. You are you for a reason, only you can be you, you are amazing.
“I am not a stranger to the dark
Hide away, they say
‘Cause we don’t want your broken parts
I’ve learned to be ashamed of all my scars
Run away, they say
No one’ll love you as you are”
Let me know in the comments your favourite part of The Greatest Showman and favourite song. I’m now going to watch it for about the hundredth time.
