Are you feeling stuck in your job and wanting to find work you love?
Picture this, you’re sat at your desk at work. The day seems to be never ending. You were sure it was at least an hour since you last looked at the clock on the wall but no, it was only 10 minutes ago!
Your colleagues are nice enough and you get along on the whole but there’s one or two ‘mood hoovers’ there too. You know the ones – every time you speak to them or hear them talk they suck the energy out of you and leave you feeling drained.
You can do your job with your eyes closed now and it doesn’t take much brain power to do your work. Every morning you go into the office and just get on with it. You sometimes look at other jobs you could do but none of them really inspire you to apply for them. Your job is ‘ok’ but you don’t love it.
You eat your lunch, often at your desk because there’s so much to do. The afternoon drags on as you attend another boring meeting that you really don’t care much about at all. You just wish you could do something exciting for once! Something with purpose where you feel like you’re making a difference. It’s time to go home. You get a text alert that there’s a backlog of traffic on your route home. You sigh as you head to your car knowing that once again you’ll be late home.
When you finally arrive home nearly an hour later than planned, you’re immediately faced with more stuff to do. Everything you need to do at home is slipping behind because you’re working such long hours. You’re missing out on time with the kids and your partner and instead of feeling refreshed at the end of the weekend, you feel exhausted and spend Sunday evening dreading going back to work on Monday.
On the outside you appear to be successful but inside you want more and you feel guilty for wanting more. After all, you’ve got a well paid job, a lovely family, you take nice holidays but you still feel bad for wanting more for you and your family. A life that feels easier and more fulfilling where you have time to breath and enjoy being with the people you love. You’re not afraid of hard work, but this just feels like a never ending hamster wheel!

Does any of that sound like your life? I feel tired just writing it, I lived that life for longer than I care to remember before finally saying to myself, ‘enough is enough’ and started my own business.
I speak to women all the time who feel stuck in jobs that they have no passion for. It breaks my heart because I know how it feels and I know we’re all worthy of so much more!
A global study (Linkedin Purpose At Work Global Report, 2016) found that the older we get, the more purpose and meaning at work outweigh salary. But you already knew that right? That nagging feeling you have that there has to be more to life than this has been there for a while now and the feeling is getting stronger.
You might be sat there thinking, ‘but I don’t know what I’m passionate about?!’
It feels overwhelming to us to decide what we’re passionate about right away especially if we’ve been in a bit of a rut lately and just about getting on with the day to day.
My suggestion for you is to get curious.
What did you used to enjoy when you were younger? When you choose a book or magazine to read, what are you drawn to? What makes you feel excited? Ask yourself what you think about current events in the media? Read about things you’re drawn to and enjoy the process. This will open up ideas you’d never have expected to be ‘your thing’.
We live in an increasingly noisy world. Especially online. We’re working hard and feel we have less time for ourselves. My advice for you is to get still and go within. How? Spend 5 minutes in silence everyday in meditation.
This can be so powerful. If you think meditation is for other people with bendier limbs then think again. It’s as simple as sitting down without distraction, closing your eyes and focusing on your breathing.
Relax your muscles as much as you can and ask yourself the question you want answered. It might be, What do I truly desire? At first, you might feel nothing but practice every day and you’ll start to hear that faint whisper of a voice inside that’s telling you the answers you need to hear. It’s your intuition. Use it and trust it. It’ll never be wrong!
As we live busy lives, we tend to follow certain routines every day. Get up, get ready, eat breakfast, go to work etc… Ever arrived at work and thought, ‘I don’t even know how I got here?’ We do so much on autopilot that we don’t realise we’re missing out on so many new paths and adventures.
What can you do differently today? Can you try a new recipe? Enrol in a local class? Take a walk in an area of your town you’ve never been? By opening yourself up to new experiences you start to learn what you love and what inspires you.
You may have been out with the girls at some point and you’ve asked each other what would you do if you won the lottery? You’ll no doubt have listed all the ways you’d spend it and how you’d help other people too.
I want to ask you a variation of this question. If time and money weren’t an issue, what could you spend all day, every day doing without getting bored? The answer to this may surprise you. You may discover you’d do something that you think would never pay the bills – but go deeper. What is it telling you about yourself and your current reality? How could you incorporate some of it into your life now? Is it highlighting an area of your life you feel is lacking?
Ok, so you’ve got to the stage where you’ve realised your purpose and what you’re passionate about. What if you think you can’t make money from it? What if you don’t know anyone who is passionate about the same thing? Do you need to retrain?
It’s not your job at this stage to worry about the how. It’s your job to continue being curious and seeking out others who are of the same mindset as you.
In my experience, being around positive people who are passionate about the same things that I am, fuels me and keeps me motivated to make what I do, work.
Seek out others who love what you love. It’s so much easier nowadays with the internet to find people on the same wavelength. Is there a facebook group you could join? Are there any local groups you could attend? The important thing is finding what you love and go with the excitement because that’s where the magic happens!
