Over the past couple of years, I’ve been doing lots of research and trying many methods of personal development to improve my mindset and overcome anxiety and depression. Here I share with you my top 4 tips to happiness that you can easily add into your daily routine.
1. Morning Routine – how you start your morning has a huge impact on the rest of your day. I realised the importance of this after reading ‘The Miracle Morning’ about a year ago and I quickly implemented it into my life and have been committed to it every day since (you can click the link to buy the book for yourself). I have a very in depth and productive morning routine that includes meditation, reading, affirmations, gratitude, exercise, positive audios and writing in my journal. The most important difference that I have found is the presence of social media in my morning. The days I used to wake up and go straight onto social media looking through everyone else’s profiles and lives, comparing myself to them and looking at everything people had that I didn’t. I then wondered why I felt limiting beliefs about myself, why I felt I wasn’t enough and people were better than me. Since starting my morning the right way I am so focused on myself and positivity that by the time I go on social media when I see other people’s profiles I don’t compare myself to them at all because I’m in the right mindset.
2. Gratitude – I say this all the time but I really believe that the simple act of gratitude is a huge part of your mindset and happiness. I’ve been practising it daily for several months now and I’ve found it’s had a great impact on my overall happiness and positivity. Even throughout the day if I’m experiencing something challenging or negative thoughts just having a few moments to reflect on what I’m grateful for instantly improves my mood.
I like to record my gratitude in a few ways, I have a gratitude jar where I write on a post-it note something that I’m grateful for. I also write in my journal three things that I’m grateful for as well as general thoughts throughout the day when I need them. 3. Self-care – most people I speak to always say they never make time for themselves, that they’re too busy either with work, family, business, hobbies and everything else in between. I used to be the same – I have a full time job, a business in coaching, play a sport competitively and spend time regularly with friends and family. So how could I possibly have time for myself in a busy life like that? Because I make time. I now understand that if I don’t put myself first and make time for myself that all these other areas, my work, family life, business etc will all be affected if I’m not feeling my best. It’s as simple as taking a few hours or an evening off, away from your business, your phone and all distractions. You can do anything that you enjoy to do, have a bath, read a book, go for a walk, meditate, watch a film. Make time for this every day even if it’s just a 10 minute meditation or 15 minutes reading, wake up 15 minutes early to allow time for this in your day. Anything that you enjoy that will allow you to relax and feel refreshed so you can then continue with your busy life feeling your best. The quote “you can’t pour from an empty cup” couldn’t be truer – take care of yourself first to give the most in all other aspects of your life. 4. Get Organised – be organised in all areas of your life, have a diary or calendar with everything you have planned so you know when you’re busy and when you’re free. Organise your house, de-clutter, throw away things you don’t use or need and keep all areas tidy so you know where everything is and never have to stress trying to find something when you need it. Have an organised wardrobe and you can even plan your outfits for events or occasions so you don’t have to worry about it the morning of the event. Write lists – shopping lists, to do lists or anything else you need to do the night before so you go to bed feeling calm and prepared for the next day.
