36 Hour Phone Detox
I thought it would be interesting to experiment having time away from my phone to see how it felt, so I did a phone detox. I usually leave my phone at home when at social events and restaurants so it’s something I’ve explored before. However I had never done a 36 hour phone detox before.
I’m going to take you through how I found the experience and what I’m going to continue going forward.
How I spent my day
I started with my morning routine and did the majority of my personal development without my phone (I meditated without the guide, visualised without the music, used my pedal bike instead of a YouTube workout)
I then spent some time tidying and de-cluttering my space. Followed my some enjoyable family time. I read about 80 pages of the Universe Has Your Back and did the exercises in the book.
I journaled on some journal prompts that I really enjoyed. Including writing 70 things that I am grateful for and 40 affirmations. I got creative with this and let my creative energy flow. I really enjoyed these activities without having my phone there to distract me.
In the afternoon I went out for a walk with my mum. I love being surrounded by nature and using the time for mindfulness. It was lovely to spend time talking and taking in the surroundings (I usually wouldn’t use my phone during this time anyway)
I spend the evening watching a new comedy series that I really enjoyed. Again this is an activity that I usually wouldn’t have my phone with me. It was a great way to end a lovely and enjoyable day.
What I missed about having my phone
Guided hypnosis audio as part of my morning routine. It is on my phone so I didn’t listen to that as I usually would
Insight Timer App for my guided meditation in the morning. I really missed having a guide for the meditation. I still meditated but without guide and in silence and I didn’t enjoy it as much as usual.
Using YouTube for a yoga flow or workout. I like to do this in the morning and the evening before bed so I really missed that. Instead I used my pedal bike and went for a walk to get my exercise in.
Listening to podcasts while getting ready and eating breakfast in the morning. I also spent some time decluttering and tidying in which I would usually listen to music or a podcast so I missed this.
Watching training videos, this is usually a Sunday activity for me where I spend some time in the courses, trainings and membership sites that I am in to catch up on training and development.
Access to my Facebook Group to interact with the members, chat and answer questions. I really missed checking in and seeing how everyone was getting on in there.
Lessons I learned from it
Your business doesn’t stop because you take a day off. I think this is a really important lesson for all online entrepreneurs to learn. It doesn’t all stop just because you don’t have access to social media. I had members join and comment in my Facebook group, enquire about Manage Anxiety: The Freedom Formula, read my blog posts, reply to my email and so much more. It all carried on as it would have on a normal day with me on my phone.
Social media is a huge distraction and can become an addiction. I actually didn’t miss having access to social media generally because, like most of us, I spend more time than I’d like to scrolling Facebook aimlessly. The time away from it made me realise that I don’t need to do this and that it’s not that bad taking time away from it. From now on I will remember this and decrease my time on social media.
My new plan going forward
I will continue to have regular time off my phone (particularly social media)
- At social events
- In the evenings after 9pm
- When having self-care time
- During business activity
- For family time
I will continue to use my phone for my morning routine to listen to the hypnosis, meditation and podcasts. I will work on resisting the temptation to scroll social media, reply to messages and respond to emails.
